These antique pietra dura earrings date to the Victorian era. The Pietra Dura technique seen here originated in Florence in the 1600s. It differs from micro-mosaic jewelry visually as the pieces are much larger; but the pieces are not glass, as in micro-mosaic jewelry: they are actually polished and thinly sliced pieces of semi-precious stone (most commonly agate, lapis lazuli, jasper, chalcedony) placed into a dark background, sometimes made of black marble. In these earrings, I believe the green is comprised of cut malachite, and the white is alabaster. These are a particularly wonderful example of pietra dura: the petals of the flowers have been cut using multiple stones, and the variations of the alabaster create a sense of depth and texture. These little wearable works of art are mounted in sterling silver, with a twisted border. They are hallmarked "sterling," with clip-on lever backs.
