Vintage Black Maltese Cross Choker
Vintage Black Maltese Cross Choker
This vintage Maltese cross ribbon choker makes a serious statement. Maltese crosses are one of my favorite jewelry motifs, and have been favored throughout jewelry history by storied firms from Verdura to Chanel. The shape's place in European jewelry can be attributed in great measure to Lady Emma Hamilton, an English model, dancer and actress, and mistress of Lord Horatio Nelson. Lady Hamilton received a Maltese cross in 1800 from the Russian Emperor Paul I. As a figure in society, she was spotted wearing the cross at social events, and soon Maltese crosses, worn as pendants and brooches, became very fashionable, with the trend peaking in the 1830s. This choker centers upon an oversizes cross, fully encrusted with sparkling stones, for a dark, romantic look. It sits on a ribbon to tie around the neck, but it has a pin back and can also be detached and worn as a brooch! The cross measures 62 mm wide x 62 mm tall, and the tie back makes the necklace length fully customizable.
