1950s Schiaparelli Striped Fur Coat | Very Breezy Private Collection, Price on Request
This Schiaparelli coat is a true once-in-a-lifetime find, and a wonderful representation of the unforgettable force of the legendary Elsa Schiaparelli. In 1927, Schiaparelli showed her first collection, encouraged by her closes relationship with infamous couturier Paul Poiret. Schiaparelli was remarkable not just for forming her own couture house in a time it was incredibly rare for a woman to do so, but for breaking the mold of her contemporaries and focusing on whimsical, feminine styles. She was notably influenced by the Surrealist movement (she worked closely with Salvador Dali) and this coat is a premiere example of her surreal, avant-garde tastes. It's constructed of rabbit fur, with unexpected shades of cherry red and cobalt blue punctuating the ivory. It's finished with custom buttons, with an irreverent Brutalist feeling, which are juxtaposed by the sweet velvet bow details.
