Made in Italy circa 1930s, I absolutely love the colors of this floral micro-mosaic, from the daffodil yellow background, to the vibrant orange and cobalt details. Note the mosaic-like border as well: the palette and design details make this extremely unusual, setting it apart from other micro-mosaics. This jewelry style was made popular in Italy, and became extreme fashionable during the Grand Tour Period (1680-1880), during which wealthy families would take lengthy trips around Europe, and pick up distinct examples of regional craftsmanship along the way. I've always been enamored with micro-mosaic jewelry and decorative art, and the way it's made is so fascinating: To create a micro mosaic, rods of opaque vitreous glass made, and then cut into tiny fragments called "tesserae." These pieces are assembled by hand in a small metal tray, in a very labor-intensive process. You will sometimes see modern reproductions of Italian micro-mosaic jewelry, but it is immediately identifiable as not original due to the larger chunky pieces, as opposed to this delicate ones which blends together nearly seamlessly. It is finished with a pin in the back, so it can be worn as a brooch, but I also love it worn vertically as a pendant, when strung on any gold chain; you can also add a gold chain if you'd like one. Hallmarked ITALY on the reverse. Measures about 3 cm diameter. The Vintage Large Gold Cross pictured is also available
