1940s Blue And White Tile Celluloid Earrings
1940s Blue And White Tile Celluloid Earrings
These vintage 1940s earrings are crafted of celluloid (also known as French Ivory) the world's first thermoplastic, which was first developed as a replacement for ivory in billiards balls, but quickly became very popular in jewelry in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In these gorgeous white earrings, the indigo blue sits in the carved relief, which reminds me of Portuguese tile (Azulejos). Since celluloid is extremely lightweight, these are so comfortable to wear and feel like nothing on the ears. Brides, take note: the combination of white and "something blue" makes these perfect for wedding events. They are finished with a clip-on lever back and measure 3 cm diameter.
