Antique Carved Bone Drop Earrings
Antique Carved Bone Drop Earrings
These antique carved bone drop earrings are a rare find— I've never seen a pair quite like these. What makes them special is the intricacy of the hand-carving on the elongated teardrop, depicting a rose motif. More commonly, you will see carved bone earrings and other jewelry sculpted on a much larger scale, which is of course easier. The tradition, however, goes back millennia: the earliest jewelry created by man used readily-available materials like animal teeth and bones as opposed to metal. Circa 19th century and made in Europe, these earrings are suspended on a gold-filled post— the next-closest metal to solid gold, which is resistant to tarnishing and safe for the skin. They are so incredibly lightweight and basically feel like nothing on the ears— the small size make them perfect for layering with other earrings in your ear stack. The have a post back for pierced ears and measure 22 mm long.
