I am in love with micro-mosaic jewelry, and this is a gorgeous original Italian antique; made in Rome in the late 19th Century, certainly picked up by a tourist as a token of fond memories. This micro-mosaic was created in the tradition of Grand Tour Period (1680-1880), during which wealthy families would take lengthy trips around Europe, and pick up distinct examples of regional craftsmanship along the way. To create a micro mosaic, rods of opaque vitreous glass made, and then cut into tiny fragments called "tesserae." These pieces are assembled by hand in a small metal tray, in a very labor-intensive process. You will sometimes see modern reproductions of Italian micro-mosaic jewelry, but it is immediately identifiable as not original due to the larger chunky pieces, as opposed to this delicate ones which blends together nearly seamlessly. It is complete with a bale/jump ring that will accomodate most chains, but you can also add a 14k gold chain if you need one. The Vintage Garnet Cross Pendant and Antique Victorian Mourning Pendant pictured are also available

Great antique condition, with natural signs of wear given its age. With any questions about the specific condition or size, please email for additional photos or measurements, as all sales are final.
