This vintage silk faille ball skirt is an amazing statement piece— I love it as an unexpected alternative to a gown for a formal or black tie event. Made by Michael Kors Collection circa early 2000s, this piece still has its original tags and was never worn, with an original retail of $1700. (On a side note, it's so sad to me that the Michael Kors brand has become so synonymous with a certain diluted, dowdy sensibility, because his main label collection has always so incredibly well made, and just the epitome of luxury.) If you look at the tailoring, you can see how well crafted this piece is, but once you put it on, it takes the experience to a whole new level. I love the use of menswear-inspired stripes, and the juxtaposition of this pattern with the ultra-feminine, Edwardian-inspired bustle. The skirt has a narrow column shape in the front, and an incredibly intricate bustle mechanism in the back, held in place by multiple snaps. There is a slight train in the back, but it's mostly volume rather than length. The construction here is seriously couture-level. Made in Italy of 100% silk.
