This rare antique Victorian pendant (or brooch) features an unusual starburst motif. Although stars are common through Victorian jewelry, more often they were emblazoned in a locket or otherwise circular piece; it's much less common to find the piece of jewelry itself in a starburst shape, as is seen here. The black onyx denotes that this is mourning jewelry, meant to commemorate the loss of a loved one. While she famously grieved her husband Prince Albert's death in 1861 for the forty years that followed, Queen Victoria popularized black jewelry and mourning elements of all sorts. In this piece, circa 1880, the seed pearl set in the center symbolized the tears shed by those left behind. The metal is solid 10k gold. It is finished in the back with a hidden pin as well as a hidden bale, so it can easily be worn as a brooch or pendant. I must point out: often in this antique pieces that can be worn interchangeable as a pin or pendant, the pin closure on the back extends outward so far that it's visible from the front of the piece, which especially disrupts the look of the piece when worn on a chain as a necklace; this is NOT the case here and that makes it all the more special to me! It's so incredibly well-crafted. The pendant is available on its own, or possible to add on a chain if you need one. Measures 3 cm x just over 2 cm. The Vintage 1970s Red Velvet Dress pictured is also available.
