Vintage 1950s Schiaparelli Leaf Earrings
Vintage 1950s Schiaparelli Leaf Earrings
These vintage Schiaparelli leaf earrings are a triumph of design from one of the 20th century's most important designers, and a highly collectible (yet wearable) piece that transcends time and trends.
In 1927, Elsa Schiaparelli showed her first collection, encouraged by her closes relationship with infamous couturier Paul Poiret. Schiaparelli was remarkable not just for forming her own couture house in a time it was incredibly rare for a woman to do so, but for breaking the mold of her contemporaries and focusing on whimsical, feminine styles. She was notably influenced by the Surrealist movement (she worked closely with Salvador Dali) and these earrings are a premiere example of her surreal, avant-garde tastes
Circa 1954, the earrings are crafted of glass, reminiscent of Lalique glass, sculpted and etched with lifelike precision. The glass stones are unfoiled and without backs, so when the light hits them, they glow with a sublime warmth, becoming almost transparent. I love the way they sit on the ear, curving upward to frame the face. They are finished with a clip-on lever back and are SO comfortable to wear and lightweight on the ear; vintage clip-ons are so much more comfortable and secure to wear compared to their modern counterparts, largely due to the quality and thought that went into their hand-made construction. This particular pair is hallmarked with patent #156453, a 1949 design patent awarded to this specific lever back for its unique ability to remain secure on the ear, without pinching, thereby ensuring hours of comfort. Additionally, they come with a padded sleeve on the lever to enhanced comfort and support. Made in France and signed "Schiaparelli" and hallmarked with patent #156453 (see above). Measures about 42 mm long x 22 mm at widest point.
