Vintage 1960s Donald Brooks Embellished Mod Cocktail Dress
Vintage 1960s Donald Brooks Embellished Mod Cocktail Dress
This very special vintage 1960s Donald Brooks dress is an iconic example midcentury fashion. Crafted of black wool, it features baguette-cut gems, which form a trompe l'oeil effect, almost like a harness or vest layered over the dress. The babydoll silhouette is so 1960s— it's fitted through the chest and sleeves, with a slight empire waist, and a built-in petticoat to create volume through the dress's skirt, which is gathered at the waist. The mini length beautifully offsets the fullness. It features a high mock neck, with buttons down the back.
Donald Brooks founded is eponymous label in 1963, and quickly grew his clientele to include the likes of Jacqueline Kennedy. Aside from designing his ready-to-wear label, he was also an Oscar-winning costume designer.
