This one-of-a-kind vintage 1980s Koos Van Den Akker mixed-media patchwork coat is a signature Koos piece that will stand the test of time, and never go out of style. Koos Van Den Akker was a Dutch-born fashion designer who became very known for his couture patchwork outwear in the 1970s and 1980s. What makes Koos pieces so unique and so special is how he “collaged” fabrics together, creating a one of a kind garment that’s almost a wearable mosaic– He is hailed him as “the master of couture collage,” and this piece is no exception, combining a multitude of different fabrications and techniques, including suede cutwork, embroidery, velvet devoré, and quilting. I love this coat because it is incredibly versatile and great for layering. The shape is giving overcoat, while the shape of the lapels are calling to mind a smocking jacket or blazer. It looks equally great worn open as it does fully fastened. It is intentionally unlined to allow the fit to be drapey, playing up this dichotomy between two different categories of garments. Layered with sweaters it can be very warm, but it’s not terribly heavy, making it suitable in a range of weather/seasons. Features pockets on either side of front.
