Circa 1980s, this special skirt set is crafted from Viyella fabric; Viyella is the first branded fabric in the world, founded in 1784 and eventually trademarked in 1894. It features a proprietary blend of 55% merino wool and 45% cotton, with fibers blended before spinning, giving it an incredibly soft yet durable feel, and a light weight and breathability that makes it suitable for all seasons— even hot weather! It is usually in a 2/2 twill weave. It was used heavily throughout the late 20th century by designers like Mary Quant, Yves St Laurent, and Nina Ricci.
This set was made by the designer Vicki Lynn Bardon, who is known for her unique use of quilting in her designs, combining various patterns and textures of fabric, stitched together in geometric shapes, literally like a quilt. (Note the quilting at the border of the skirt, which includes velvet and additional patterns— this is a fabulous example of her work.) Though her clothing was sold by well-known luxury retailers like Saks Fifth Avenue and Bloomingdales, it was also displayed in art galleries and museums as literally works of art, thanks to her unconventional, hand-made approach. Vicki Lynn Bardon was a champion of what we would now describe as the "cottage-core" aestethic. Princess Diana was a huge fan of her work, and she designed custom pieces for the late Princess of Wales.
This set is so beautifully constructed: the top features a bateau neckline with unique pleating, and a dolman sleeve with volume through the arm, tapering at the cuff, creating a bishop sleeve silhouette. The skirt has a wrap closure, with beautiful quilted details as mentioned above. These pieces can be mixed and worn separately, creating endless styling opportunities and a multitude of looks with one set.
Measurements: Sizing will depend on how you'd like to wear it: with the top tucked or untucked, with the skirt sitting at the natural waist or lower, etc. Note that the top is quite forgiving, and the skirt waist measurement can be easily adjusted by just moving the hook closures a bit, because it's a wrap skirt; can be made booth smaller and larger!
Top:
Chest: flexible because of dropped armhole/not fitted; between armpits is 40" but note that this is dropped lower than where the actual chest sits.
Length: 21" down center front
Skirt:
Waist: could very easily be adjusted by moving hooks; as-is: 27" laid flat, up to 28" pulled taut (If you want to wear the top tucked into skirt, account for this in waist measurement. It is shown unclipped on a size X-Small.)
Hips are open
Length: 31"
