THIERRY MUGLER FALL 1992 RUNWAY VELVET TRIM CORSET-JACKET AND SKIRT SUIT

This Thierry Mugler skirt suit, from the Autumn 1992 couture collection, is a classic example of what made Mugler such a visionary of his era. It's a rare work of couture,  and a truly breathtaking collector's item, an especially iconic look from Mugler that's constantly referenced in fashion history— see it in the original runway show below. Thierry Mugler and his work have been the subject of many a museum retrospective for a reason: he is responsible for defining the fashion landscape of the late 1980s and early 1990s, with his unabashedly feminine, sensual, borderline-campy perspective. The construction of this blazer is honestly insane, emulating a corset in jacket form. I've never seen a jacket tailored quite like this one: fullness in chest gives way to a corset-like panel at the waist, with the hips flaring to a signature Mugler peplum, with a structured pagoda shape. In the back, the waistband breaks off into a belt overlay, with a lace-up corset closure, creating a highly flattering hourglass shape. Velvet accents throughout are mirrored in velvet ribbon ties— note the Mandarin collar, which can be worn with the ribbon tied for a high-neck look, or worn open. Fitted arms offset the fullness at the chest, with ruffled cuffs. It closes with fabric-covered buttons down the front, and at the cuffs. The jacket is fully lined on the interior, with shoulder pads contributing the hourglass shape. The skirt features a lace-up corset tie at the back hem, mirroring the lace-up details on the jacket. Shaping seams down the front and darts in the back created a fitted look. The skirt has a defined waistband, making it very suitable to be worn on its own. Closes in the back with a zipper, hook, and snaps. Made in France of 100% worsted wool.
