Vintage Gold Maltese Cross Earrings
Vintage Gold Maltese Cross Earrings
Maltese crosses are one of my favorite jewelry motifs, and have been favored throughout jewelry history by storied firms from Verdura to Chanel. The shape's place in European jewelry can be attributed in great measure to Lady Emma Hamilton, an English model, dancer and actress, and mistress of Lord Horatio Nelson. Lady Hamilton received a Maltese cross in 1800 from the Russian Emperor Paul I. As a figure in society, she was spotted wearing the cross at social events, and soon Maltese crosses, worn as pendants and brooches, became very fashionable, with the trend peaking in the 1830s. These stately crosses have a matte gold finish, set with an emerald-cut paste ruby. They measure 1.75" long and wide, and are finished with a clip-on lever back.
