This vintage 1980s Mary McFadden dress has a quilted silk body, with heavily embellished long sleeves— similar Mary McFadden pieces are held in art and design museums around the world. McFadden started her clothing label in the 1970s, and eventually went on to become one of the greatest American designers of her time. An erudite art collector, world traveller, and lover of history, she made a name for herself by drawing inspiration from the traditional textiles and art objects she picked up along the way. The incredible beadwork on this piece, which features dozens of different beads, is an example of how she transformed this ancient inspiration to modern designs. Aside from the statement of the sleeves, I adore the shape of this dress. The silk is quilted—a signature Mary McFadden technique—to create structure. Though it falls at an A-line, it maintains its shape in an unusual way, giving an architectural effect. It could also be hemmed to make it more of a mini!
Measurements: Note that it is not meant to be fitted to the body; it's likely best for an X-Small, Small, and possibly Medium with smaller chest, but please refer to below measurements to be sure.
Shoulders: 13"
Chest: 35"
Waist: 31"
Length: just shy of 34" from shoulder to hem
Great vintage condition overall, with some minor repairs to the beadwork in a specific spot, but it blends in with the intricate design/texture and is not noticeable when worn. The dress presents flawlessly. With any questions about the specific condition or size, please email shop@verybreezy.com for additional photos or measurements, as all sales are final.
