This iconic vintage Pierre Balmain cocktail dress has a fitted long sleeve bodice, with a gathered taffeta skirt, defined by a pleated ruffle at the hip— such an interesting shape, and one that really flatters the figure. From the storied house of Balmain, this chic little black dress is anything but basic, and is exemplary of Balmain's work from this iconic era. There is no waistband at the natural waist, which is really elongating, but I love that it is still very much fitted at the natural waist— combined with the volume at the hips, and the built out shoulders, this creates the appearance of an hourglass shape with a tiny waist. The armholes are somewhat dropped which contributes to this shape— as does the slightly asymmetrical hemline, which has a lengthening effect. I love the subtle V in the back, in contrast to the higher neckline in the front. The construction is impeccable, with a grosgrain waist stay that the interior which helps to create the perfect seamless fit.
