Vintage 1950s Lace Sweetheart Neckline Mermaid Gown

Circa late 1950s/early 1960s, this vintage red lace mermaid gown is such a siren moment— equal parts sexy and elegant. It was custom-made for a socialite of European nobility, who was prominent in both New York and European circles, and had an important collection of fashion and jewelry... including this gown! The quality is truly incredible, with hand-finished details and thoughtful construction. It's crafted from the most exquisite Alençon lace, which is marked by raised, corded details, in a true crimson red color. At the neckline, hem, and sleeves, the lace comes to a scalloped edge, with delicate eyelash details. I love the sweetheart neckline— this, along with the fitted, gathered chest, really emphasizes the décolletage in a flattering way. With a waist seam at the underbust, the waist is fitted through the natural waist with shaping seams, giving that hourglass "snatched" look. The skirt has a mermaid shape: fitted through the hips, and flaring out near the knees, with a very slight train (the hem is just slightly longer in the back). This dress is bra-friendly; it has "bra-holder" straps at the shoulder, which snap to hold a bra strap in place, so that it's not slipping out/becoming visible at the neckline. This is just one of many thoughtful construction elements that make this dress so luxurious and special— there are also protectors at the underarm's interior to prevent discoloration from perspiration. It closes with a zipper down the back. (Note the zipper is not the original zipper.)

Measurements: This will likely fit a modern size Small/Medium, depending on exact measurements, but please refer to below measurements to be sure. Note that there is some excess fabric inside the dress that makes it very easy to let out and make larger in places. Likewise, it could be very easily taken in using these same existing seams.

Shoulders: 16" laid flat, up to 17.5+" with give
Chest: 36" laid flat, up to 40.5" considering all the gathering at the chest (this is designed to be worn with a bra, can also be taken in easily)
Empire waist: 30" laid flat, up to 31.5" pulled taut
Waist: 28" laid flat, up to 29.75" pulled taut
Hips: 37" laid flat, up to about 39" pulled taut
Length: about 56" from shoulder to front hem (hem is about 3" longer in back)
