Vintage Sander Witlin Couture Coat Dress
Vintage Sander Witlin Couture Coat Dress
This vintage Sander Witlin Couture coat dress is defined by shaping seams to create a very flattering hourglass silhouette, reminiscent of Dior's New Look. From the estate of a New York social figure, I absolutely love this piece because it's so versatile, as it can be worn as outerwear (layered over something as a coat) or worn as a dress, fully buttoned with nothing under.
Sander Witlin began his career as a fine artist, working in New York for about twenty years as an artist and illustrator, before beginning to design clothing around 1980. His pieces were mostly one-off couture designs, catering to public figures and specific clientele in the entertainment industry. From 1986 to 2001, he had a salon on Madison Avenue where he worked with his clients. Indeed, this piece was custom-made for one of those very clients, a New York socialite, so it is one-of-a-kind and you won't find another.
The olive green fabric is so gorgeous, with an almost metallic sheen— its unique texture is a cross between silk faille and dupioni. (The fiber contents are not listed as it was custom made, but it feels like a cotton/silk blend.) It is well-lined making it versatile to layer or wear on its own. It buttons down the front, with seams creating faux-pockets. Subtle shoulder pads serve to round out the hourglass shape nicely
Measurements: Will fit a range of sized depending on desired fit and how you would like to wear it; Will likely fit a size X-Small, Small, and Medium, but please refer to below measurements to be sure.
