Vintage Sterling Silver Scrimshaw Ring
Vintage Sterling Silver Scrimshaw Ring
This vintage Scrimshaw style ring is made of decorated shell and sterling silver. Scrimshaw jewelry has such an interesting history— its roots are as an on-board hobby for eighteenth century whalers with downtime on a fishing vessel. The sailors would take the byproduct of whales (the tooth or bones) and engrave them with sketches, typically ones of a nautical motif. This one is instead made of shell, but int he same style. The shell on this ring has an organically irregular shape, and I love the way the design respects that, resulting in a one-of-a-kind asymmetrical design. It is sterling silver (unmarked but tested). It is approximately a size 6.5. The Vintage Mignon Faget Sterling Silver Ionic Column Ring and other rings pictured are also available.
