Vintage Thierry Mugler Spring 1996 Beaded Cocktail Dress
Vintage Thierry Mugler Spring 1996 Beaded Cocktail Dress
This vintage Thierry Mugler beaded cocktail dress hails from the spring 1996 collection— it's twin walked the runway (see image below) but this dress is even more special with the impeccable embellishment. The white cotton pique foldover necklace was the signature element of the Spring 1996 collection, making this such an iconic collector's piece. Thierry Mugler and his work have been the subject of countless museum retrospective for a reason: he is responsible for defining the fashion landscape of the late 1980s and early 1990s, with his unabashedly feminine, sensual, borderline-campy perspective. This dress, with its trompe l'oeil beading, is so exemplary of the clever nature of Mugler's design sensibility. The distinct shape of the straps (which I love) was also a signature of this Spring 1996 collection. The beading, mimicking the boning of a corset, creates a flattering illusion, with slit pockets cut into one plane of the beadwork. Sheer mesh at the hem with lattice beading is echoed in the lattice beading at the split neckline. The tailoring is incredible, creating the most seamless, flattering fit— the chest is built out into defined cups. Made in France; fully lined, closes with a zipper in the back, and snaps at the white foldover.
